Belonging and inclusion
As we work our way through week 2, it has been great to see the identity of our new akomanga (classrooms) developing and becoming present. We know the central role that 'belonging' plays in learning, or for our children to know that they belong here - and it is 'us' at KWNS. Part of this, is children learning about each other - and making the space they will learn in look like it is collectively theirs for the year.
School connection - School - Whānau Picnic (Thursday 19th 5 -6:30pm)
As you will have hopefully seen, the school is hosting our annual start of year picnic. The last two having been lovely evenings weather-wise so we are hoping for three in a row. The night is very much about our community - an easy evening in which your children can play together, whilst you hang out with families in our school. We really hope to see you there - it's worth coming to - and building that sense of belonging with us.

HERO - our communication tool
This year, like last, the HERO app will be used as our main source of communication. On it, you can expect posts relating specifically to your child(ren)'s learning throughout the term, and weekly posts highlighting special parts of the week. Equally, classroom teachers will use it to communicate specific things relating to the group. Teachers do spend a bit of time creating and posting on the platform - and it goes a long way to add a 'like' on the post to show that you've seen it and appreciate it.

School reporting - Government Announcement
You may have read recently the direction from the Government around uniform school reporting to parents. It is an interesting move, as like most things, there are bound to be schools where their current report card is strong and needs no adjustment. Conversely, there may be some schools where improvements might be required. Does this or should this require strict uniformity from all?
From my perspective, and in alignment with our practice, I think it is very important that parents receive a clear, uncomplicated picture of how their child is progressing (mid year) and achieving (end of year) against year level curriculum expectations. I hope you will agree that our reports do so. I would valuing hearing from you on this matter, should you wish.
Respected partnership is the key: A main final point I will make is, that questions you have around how your child is progressing are welcome at any point in the year - you don't need to wait until our learning conferences or report cards. We will always get in touch if we have concerns - however, in the spirit of partnership, we would like you to do the same. Our motivation is the same as yours - for your child to be getting, and contributing to, as much as possible from school.
