Student Attendance and Lateness As you may be aware, the Ministry of Education is now closely tracking (watching) student attendance and arrival (lateness) to school. Each day, schools have been instructed to put our numbers through to the ministry. As a school we are human too, and understand that life in the morning can be exceptionally busy and lateness can sometimes not be helped (e.g. traffic etc). It is the regular lateness that should be improved. In reality, it is important for children to learn that being on time is important and courteous to others.
Positively, it is known that every day at school counts and allows our ākonga to progress and excel with their learning across our rich curriculum (e.g. academic, cultural and social learning). Please ensure that children are at school and ready to learn by 9:00 a.m. That’s when classes begin. If your child is late regularly, they are missing out on learning in the same area every day. Classrooms open at 8.30 a.m.
School Picnic Thank you to everyone who attended the school picnic last week - it was really lovely to see you there. It was also great to get to speak to a number of parents, and to hear different perspectives about how things are going. It helps us as a school.
I wish to also express our huge thanks to the wonderful Friends of the School who put on the BBQ. They managed to sell out of all the goods, and thus make a great amount of money for our school.
Karori Op Shop A public note of sincere thanks to the St Johns Trust Op Shop in Karori who have very generously donated $5000.00 to the school. This money will be put to good use, and in accordance with their wishes be used to support those less fortunate in our community. A truly lovely thing.
Music lessons for Kahikatea (Year 3/4) and Matai (Year 5/6) This year we have the wonderful Teresa teaching our Kahikatea and Matai syndicates music. The instrument of choice is the fabulous recorder - as it is an easy instrument to access for children (and does sound great when played well). I am sure that you can agree that Music is great and very rich in terms of learning (think: counting, beat, tempo, pitch, teamwork, perseverance, expression etc). Western Zone Cricket A couple of shots from the enjoyable, and participation focused, Western Zone Cricket event at Karori Park yesterday. As has become the norm, our 4 teams played with excellent sportsmanship and were highly encouraging of one another.
Contact Details: If you have moved over the school break, changed work places or phone numbers, or your emergency contacts have changed, please ring the office (476-6165) or email Tina or Nikki: office@kwns.school.nz with your updated details. It is essential these are up to date in case we need to contact you urgently.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
Next week we start Māehe Manawa Ora - Movin' March, a fantastic initiative organised by Greater Wellington Regional Council. The main purpose is to encourage students to get moving by walking or scootering to and from school. Teachers will be handing out 'passport cards' that will be signed when your child walks, bikes or scooters to or from school. There are all sorts of prizes to be won, so please help your child participate. If the journey to school is too far, please consider encouraging them to walk part of the way.

Celebrate this Easter with delicious Hot X Buns from Doughboys Bakery in Palmerston North.
As you may be aware, this year we moved to HERO, a New Zealand owned and operated Student Management System. With Hero, you can:
read school notices sent to the class or groups your child is part of
see what learning has occurred in class
respond to school notices such as surveys and trip permission requests
view a school calendar of events and view school term dates
notify the school if your child is absent or late
navigate to the school website and Facebook page
select how you wish to receive notifications
Hero has a number of other features that we plan to introduce in the future. We want to move as quickly as we can to Hero so we aren’t duplicating our communications. However, we understand that it may take some time for all families to get set up. Because of this, we will continue to email you school notifications through to end of Term 1. After this time, all school communication will move to Hero.
How to access Hero
To download the app: scan the QR code (top right) or search ‘Hero by linc-ed’ in the app store.
